New robotic welding lab with laser-assisted MIG process
SKS recently met the industry's demand for more efficient solutions with a new test laboratory. In this lab, welding tests are performed using a hybrid welding process, where a laser is combined with the SKS’s own proven MIG processes. The core function of the laser here is to inject additional energy. Initial results show that – in addition to higher welding speeds and deeper constant penetration – the line energy and component distortion can be significantly reduced. This results in cost savings in series production at high volumes. First trials with a laser hybrid torch head were already carried out in 2007 at the company’s former location in Landstuhl.
A 3-kW fiber laser was used in combination with a Power Joint torch system and standard SKS components and a specially developed laser head. In the context of a publicly supported research project with the Technical University Lausitz, the economic efficiency and applicability of the laser hybrid torch head were investigated. Now, the second generation with a new 8-kW laser and a completely new developed hybrid torch head with a Frontpull torch system and SKS standard components, more efficient joining solutions are investigated. Initial application tests have already been successfully completed.
