Water Joint: Power Joint torch system upgrade for a wider field of applications
For SKS, highest possible operational time is paramount. This requirement is met by the air-cooled Power Joint torch system with full support of process arm robots. The torch system can rotate endlessly on the robot wrist and relieves the torch cable from torsional stress, for a longer lifetime. However, air-cooled torch systems cannot reasonably dissipate large amounts of heat in specific applications, such as in thick sheet applications, multilayer or aluminum welding, where high current or high duty cycle (up to 100 %) are required. The joint power was therefore upgraded to cool the consumables with a rotatable endlessly rotatable Water Joint for even higher “hotter” applications.
Typical applications with large amounts of heat occur in the manufacturing of commercial vehicles, rail vehicles and special machinery. Water Joint torch systems have proven their performance during a one-year pilot operation under such conditions. Now, we can offer our customers a product that is ready for series production.
With 72 mm2, the cross section of the copper conductor as compared to conventional water-cooled torches is very large. Therefore, it produces less voltage drops and stays relatively cool even without water cooling. Only the parts at the torch tip affected by the reflected energy of the welding process require additional cooling. Low power loss and targeted water cooling increase the efficiency of the overall system.
Another advantage for the investor is SKS' modular system design.
The components not affected by water cooling are identical with those of the Power Joint that has proven its reliability in more than 6,000 installations: torch cable, the gas nozzle, and the wearing parts. This approach saves both direct costs for the acquisition and indirect costs for the management of spare parts.
